Learn About the Minerals Known As Mica ThoughtCo

The mica minerals are distinguished by their perfect basal cleavage, which means that they are easily split into thin, often transparent, sheets. Two micas, biotite, and muscovite, are so common that they are considered rock forming minerals. The rest are relatively uncommon, but phlogopite is the most likely of these to be seen in the field.

Mica

OVERVIEWCLASSIFICATIONOCCURRENCE AND PRODUCTIONPROPERTIES AND USESHEALTH IMPACTSUBSTITUTESThe mica group of sheet silicate minerals includes several closely related materials having nearly perfect basal cleavage. All are monoclinic, with a tendency towards pseudohexagonal crystals, and are similar in chemical composition. The nearly perfect cleavage, which is the most prominent characteristic of mica, is explained by the hexagonal sheet like arrangement of its atoms. The word mica is derived from the Latin word mica, meaning a crumb, and probably influenced by micare, to glitter.

DESCRIPTIONRELATION TO MININGUSESMica is a mineral name given to a group of minerals that are physically and chemically similar. They are all silicate minerals, known as sheet silicates because they form in distinct layers. Micas are fairly light and relatively soft, and the sheets and flakes of mica are flexible. Mica is heat resistant and does not conduct electricity. There are 37 different mica minerals. The most common include purple lepidolite, black biotite, brown phlogopite and clear muscovite.

Mica mining, because of the necessity of keeping the crystals intact, is a delicate operation; drills and blasting powder must be used carefully, if at all. The mined crystals are first "cobbed," i.e., roughly trimmed of rock and cut, then split with a hammer into plates, and further split into sheets with a knife.
